The Municipality of Kardzhali can be characterized by a well-developed health care system which includes private physicians’ offices and a great number of medical experts. The following health care institutions function in the Municipality: a Clinic for Pulmonary and Phtisiatric Diseases; State Psychiatric Hospital; Emergency Department; Diagnostic and Treatment Centre; Dental Centre, “Pharma” Municipal Pharmaceutical Association; HEI and others.
During the last five years the number of the health care institutions has not changed, but the bed fund has decreased by 50% .

These statistics for the whole Municipality indicate that: there are 277 people per one doctor, and 1779 people per one dentist.
The more serious diseases from which the people of Kardzhali Municipality suffer are the following ones: pulmonary, oncological, cardio-vascular and endocrine system diseases. Kardzhali Municipality’s population receives health care mainly in medical ambulatory and polyclinic institutions, where overall attention is paid to offering emergency assistance, feminine health care, including endocrinological, gynaecological, androgenic and genetic medical assistance.
For the time being, the social and economic state of the health care system in the Municipality of Kardzhali can be characterized by the introduction of a structural reform and the health insurance system, both being introduced in the whole country as well. In order to implement the health care reform in Kardzhali Municipality, it is important to take into account the development of the buildings of current health care institutions /which have already become obsolete and old-fashioned/and the modernization of medical, information, communication, sanitary and transport equipment network.
Finally, as it becomes obvious from the above mentioned data, the existing structure of health care institutions in Kardzhali Municipality meets the needs of the population for the time being. The health care reform that has already been initiated, as well as the implementation of the projects that are foreseen in Kardzhali Municipality’s Development Strategy will contribute to the establishment of a new health care system which meets the European requirements.
